Day 1: Arrival – Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) to Moshi
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a representative will meet and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi. You’ll receive a detailed briefing about the trek, gear checks, and preparation tips for the climb ahead. Get a good night’s rest before your adventure begins.
Day 2: Moshi – Rongai Start Point to Simba Camp
Elevation:(2,626m) to Kikelewa Camp (3,679m)
Hiking Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest
Your journey begins with a scenic drive through the countryside to the Rongai Gate, the starting point on the northern side of the mountain near the Kenyan border.
After completing park formalities, the trek starts through a lush pine forest, with the possibility of spotting colobus monkeys and other wildlife. The trail gradually ascends to Simba Camp, offering beautiful views of the Kenyan plains.
Day 3: Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp
Elevation:2,626m to 3,679m
Hiking Distance: 11 km (7 miles)
Hiking Time: 6-7 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Leaving Simba Camp, the trek continues with a steady climb through the heath and moorland zone. Enjoy breathtaking views of Kibo and the vast Amboseli Plains. After passing Second Cave (3,450m) for a short break, the trail leads to Kikelewa Camp, where you’ll set up for the night near a valley with a small stream.
Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,303m)

Hiking Distance: 5 km (3 miles)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today’s trek is short but steep, leading up to the Mawenzi Tarn, a spectacular campsite nestled beneath the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. This is an essential acclimatization day, allowing your body to adjust to the high altitude. The views from the campsite over the Kibo Saddle are stunning.
Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Elevation:4,303m to 4,730m
Hiking Distance: 9 km (5.5 miles)
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The trail crosses the lunar-like landscape of the Saddle, a wide, barren stretch between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. You’ll arrive at Kibo Hut, your base camp for the summit attempt. After an early dinner, get some rest before the midnight summit push.
Day 6: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak– Summit Attempt – Descend to Horombo Hut
Elevation:5,895m to 3,705m
Hiking Distance: 21 km (13 miles)
Hiking Time: 12-16 hours (Summit & Descent)
Habitat: Arctic to Moorland
Summit Night! You will be awakened around midnight to start the toughest and most rewarding part of the climb. The trail leads steeply up to Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim, where you’ll witness a breathtaking sunrise.
A final push leads you to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa!After celebrating your achievement, descend back to Kibo Hut for rest and lunch before continuing down to Horombo Hut for an overnight stay.
Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate– Return to Moshi
Elevation:3,705m to 1,860m
Hiking Distance: 20 km (12.5 miles)
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
The final stretch of your trek descends through the lush rainforest, passing Mandara Hut, before reaching Marangu Gate. Here, you’ll receive your summit certificates and be transferred back to Moshi for a well-deserved celebration at the hotel.
