Mount Meru

Safari Overview

3 Days Mount Meru Trekking is the perfect choice for acclimatization before tackling Kilimanjaro. Not only is it the third-highest peak in Africa, but it is also the second-highest peak in Tanzania, standing proudly at 4,568m. Located in a stunning part of Tanzania, this trek offers a unique opportunity to spot wildlife and take in breathtaking scenery.

The ascent is quite steep, featuring a variety of landscapes—streams, parkland, montane forest, a giant heather zone, and moorland. Finally, the summit is reached by navigating a narrow, barren ridge, offering stunning views of the Ash Cone several thousand feet below in the crater.

Day 1: Arusha to Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

Elevation: 1,500m (4,921ft) to 2,500m (8,202ft)
Distance: 7km (4.3mi)
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Your adventure begins with a morning drive from Arusha to Momella Gate, where registration formalities are completed. The trek starts with a gentle ascent through open grasslands and acacia woodlands, offering sightings of giraffes, zebras, Cape buffaloes, and warthogs.

Unlike the usual direct path, we take a detour through Fig Tree Arch, a magnificent natural tree tunnel that you walk through—an excellent spot for photos. The hike continues through the lush forest, home to Colobus monkeys and vibrant birdlife, before reaching Miriakamba Hut, nestled on the mountain’s lower slopes.

Elevation: 2,500m (8,202ft) to 3,500m (11,483ft)
Distance: 8km (5mi)
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours

Today’s ascent follows a scenic, less-traveled route via Elephant Ridge, offering panoramic views of the Meru Crater and Ash Cone. The trail climbs steeply through a misty montane forest before reaching the Elephant Ridge viewpoint—an excellent stop to soak in the beauty of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.

Continuing along the rugged ridge, we enter the moorland zone, where the vegetation becomes sparse, and the air cooler. Wildlife sightings, including mountain reedbucks and elusive leopards, are possible. By afternoon, we reach Saddle Hut, where we enjoy an acclimatization trek to Little Meru (3,820m/12,532ft) before resting for the summit push.

Elevation: 3,500m (11,483ft) to 4,562m (14,967ft) to 1,500m (4,921ft)
Distance: 28km (17mi)
Hiking Time: 12-14 hours

The final ascent begins just after midnight, ensuring we reach Socialist Peak (4,562m/14,967ft) by sunrise. The climb is steep and challenging, with sections of exposed ridges and loose scree.

We pass Rhino Point (3,800m) before tackling the last stretch, where the wind and altitude test our endurance. At the summit, enjoy 360-degree views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Great Rift Valley, and the endless savanna below.

After celebrating, we descend via a different route that offers new scenery, stopping at Miriakamba Hut for brunch before continuing down to Momella Gate. A vehicle awaits to transfer you back to Arusha, marking the end of an unforgettable adventure.
